This is a truth. Chase Freedom Card is not my top choice of cashback credit card now. Today, however, I received an email from Chase that my Chase Freedom Card is offering 3% cashback on selected categories from October 1 to December 31, 2009.

The promotional link to this promotion is at: www.ChaseBonus.Com/freedom41. You need to enter your last name, last four digits of your account number, zip code and email address. This promotion will allow you to get 3% cashback on discount stores, computer and electronic stores and bookstores. Since the big shopping season is coming soon, this promotion definitely offers great chance to save money on above 3 categories. You can also call 1-877-532-3820 to enroll in this promotion.

Fine print:

To be eligible for this bonus offer, you must either call the phone number or log on to the website referenced in this offer by 12/10/2009. This bonus offer only applies to net purchases made with your credit card during the promotional period at retail establishments that classify their merchant location for Visa/MasterCard in any of the following categories: bookstores, discount stores, electronics and computer stores. Online and catalog purchases are not eligible to receive the bonus rewards unless the merchants have correctly identified and billed the transactions. We do not determine whether merchants correctly identify and bill transactions as being made in each category. However, we do reserve the right to determine which purchases qualify for the bonus rewards. Please allow 6 to 8 weeks after the last day of the promotional period for bonus rewards to post to your account. Maximum bonus reward accumulation during the promotional period is $30. Bonus rewards earned from this promotional offer will not count against any maximum reward accumulation in the rewards program, if applicable. Credit card product changes during the promotional period will forfeit this bonus offer. To qualify for this promotional offer, account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. This promotional offer is non-transferable and applies only to the account ending in the last 4 digits referenced in this offer.

Chase just sent me a mail regarding the new rewards program for Chase Freedom Card with Chase Exclusive. I’m sad to tell you that the rewards for this Chase Freedom Card is getting worse. BUT, Chase gives the new rewards program a better name-Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Previously, Chase exclusive (people who have a checking account at Chase) for Chase Freedom Card members can get 3% cashback from 6 different categories each month. Now, you can get 1 point for $1 spent plus 10% bonus points (minimum $10 to start getting bonus points). If you are a Chase exclusive member, you can get 10 bonus points for each transaction. If you are not a Chase exclusive member, sorry, all you can get is 1 point plus 10% bonus points.

Let’s do the math:

Previous Chase Freedom Card: $100 can give you $3 cashback which is equal to 300 points.

Current Chase Freedom Card: $100 can give you 100+10+100 (maximum, assume $10 each transaction)=210 points.

The 210 points are based on the assumption that you use 10 transactions with $10 each, and 210 points are the maximum bonus you can get.

More information about the new Ultimate Rewards program can be found at chase.com/tour.

Chase just launched a new credit card product not long time ago—the Chase Travel Rewards Credit Card. This is a high-end Chase Credit Card with some great benefits. Furthermore, this card is offering 25,000 bonus miles after first purchase which is a great deal to catch for most people with decent credit score and solid credit history.

The 25,000 bonus miles is the reason why I recommend this card to my readers. Nowadays, most credit card issuers are having a hard time. More and more credit card members are filing bankruptcy and can’t pay their balance down. Recently most credit cards are not offering 0% APR on balance transfer any more. This is a sign that credit card issuers are tightening their wallets. Chase Freedom Card is now only offer 3% Cash Back on Gas, Groceries, and Fast Food Purchases for the First 6 Months. And then the categories will be changing every quarter. The Chase Freedom Plus Card seems not have been influenced and is still offering 10,000 bonus miles and 3 miles per $1 on 6 categories.

So what is the requirement to get 25,000 bonus miles?

After your first purchase, you’ll receive enough bonus miles to redeem for a round-trip ticket when booked through Chase. In addition to booking travel on your own, Chase Travel Rewards lets you redeem a round-trip ticket with a $400 value for just 25,000 miles.

Although there is a $49 annual fee, this fee is waived for the first year. (Pretty same as the Gold Card from the American Express)

Chase claims that the rewards can be used to book any flight, any hotel, any reservation — anytime, anywhere. With Chase Travel Rewards, you won’t be tied down to one business or even a group of businesses. Earn and spend your miles the way you want. There are no caps, no expiration, and no blackouts.

As Chase indicates, you can redeem for:

Any flight

Any hotel

Any restaurant

Any time

Any place

There is no pre-set spending limit on this card which gives you additional spending flexibility should you need it, so you can enjoy added peace of mind. You will receive a year-end summary statement from Chase which allows you to better understand you spending and save more in the future.

Chase has just updated its famous and most popular credit card product—the Chase Freedom Credit Card. You can’t find any link to apply for the previous Chase Freedom Visa Signature Card. Since this is a new credit card product or more accurately, this is the replacement of the previous Chase Freedom Card, I will do a short review of this card and give some tips here.

The Chase Freedom Card is one of my favorite credit cards, and I use it a lot. But it seems the new card members will not receive the great cash back offers now. Now, it seems that the Chase Freedom’s rewards program just got downgraded to a program that’s like other general rewards programs: 3% Bonus Cash Back on Gas, Groceries, and Fast Food Purchases for the First 6 Months. 1% Unlimited Cash Back on Everything Else. No Cap. No Expiration. This is a huge change of their rewards program! It’s very obvious that this rewards program is not as good as previous one! Besides, Chase also do the rewards as discover card: cardholders will receive quarterly bonus opportunities, which offer 3% cash back. I’m really disappointed at the rewards program.

The only highlight of this card is the 0% intro APR on purchases for up to 12 months. I think Chase is aimed at those in great need of money because of the financial crisis. For general consumers, this Chase Freedom Card is not a recommended card any longer.

One thing I am still happy with the Chase Freedom Card is, however, the great Chase Rewards Plus program. If you are a Chase Freedom Card owner, you are automatically enrolled in the Chase Freedom Rewards Plus, a shopping rewards program like ebates.com, ShopDiscover etc. Your rewards earned through the Chase Rewards Plus is credited to your Chase Freedom Card and you can redeem the rewards altogether.

Plus, according to Chase, this credit card is designed for those who have excellent credit and who plan to take advantage of the cash rewards program.

A very useful tip: If you apply for the new Chase Freedom card through www.chasefreedomnow.com, you can get 5,000 bonus points which can be redeemed for a $50 gift card. So you can still get $50 sign up bonus from this card, but only at www.chasefreedomnow.com.

So it’s very obvious that this Chase Freedom Card is not a great cash back card for everyday rewards. The question is: are there other cards that give you great cash back rewards?

Following are some suggestions:

TrueEarnings Business Card from Costco and American Express: 5% cash back at pumps, 3% cash back for eating out, 2% cash back for traveling, and 1% cash back for everything else.

Blue Cash from American Express: You can get 5% cash back on everyday purchase if you spend over $6,500 each year.

Discover More Card: earn 5% cash back on selected categories for every quarter which is way better than curerrent Chase Freedom Card.

WaMu was acquired by JP Morgan Chase & Co in last week. And the Wachovia (banking operations) is acquired by the Citi Group yesterday. The FDIC press release can be found here. Another bank that is still in struggling is the National City Bank. The stock price of National City dropped a lot in the past week. However, in the credit card market, it seems that every credit card issuers are still in good operations even though we still have serious credit crisis now.

JP Morgan Chase & Co should be a very reliable bank under this situation. Today I was informed that there is a new promotion that is going to start between October and December from Chase. This promotion is targeted to the Chase Freedom Card members.

According to the invitation letter, you can choose one of the three pre-selected bonus rewards:

3% cash back

$25 gift card

3-bureau credit report and score

To redeem this offer, you have to register at www.chasebonus.com/holiday1 and select which bonus award you would like to have. And then from October 1 to December 31, 2008, all you have to do is to spend more than $250 on home furnishing, home repair, and home and garden supply purchase! (I believe different customers will receive different purchasing requirements.)

Compared to the $25 offer, I would probably go for the free 3-bureau credit report and score which values more than $25.

Fine print: Bonus Rewards is defined as a choice of cash back, $25 gift card or a 3-bureau credit report and score. In order to be eligible for a bonus reward, you must first enroll by blogging on to the opt-in website using your last name, last 4 digits of your account number and zip code. Once your bonus reward selection has been made, it cannot be changed. If you selected the 3-bureau credit report and score as your bonus reward, the credit report information will be obtained from one or more of the three national credit repositories, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. Chase uses First Advantage Membership Services to provide the information to you.

I have many reviews and tips on the famous Chase Freedom Card which offers $50 sign-up bonus and gives you 3% cash back on certain categories. This credit card is one of my top rated rewards credit cards and it is also the most popular credit card issued by Chase with more than 1.5 million cardholders. If you use the Chase Freedom Card together with the Blue Cash from American Express, you will be surprised to see how much cash back you can earn from them (Of course, this is good for big spenders only.).

However, it seems I neglect the other upgraded Chase Freedom Card issued from Chase—the Chase Freedom Plus Credit Card. This is a new credit card product launched in late 2007 aimed to attract more credit card consumers who want to get more rewards by using a credit card. Some of previous Chase Freedom Card members have converted to the Chase Freedom Plus Card while they can still keep the same account number. So what’s new in the Chase Freedom Plus Credit Card?

As far as I can tell, there are four improvements on the Chase Freedom Plus Card.

The number of bonus categories increases from 3 to 6.

The rewards cap for bonus categories is lifted. This is a really good move for those big spenders!

The sign-up bonus is increased to 10,000 bonus miles which can be redeemed as $100 ($50 for the Chase Freedom Card).

More versatile rewards programs. Unlike the Chase Freedom Card which you can only accumulate points or cash, the Chase Freedom Plus Card allows you to choose which kind of rewards you want to accumulate. You can switch between cash back, points and miles.

According to the fine print, this program gives you more freedom to choose which rewards you like:

If you choose to switch how you earn rewards, and you are earning your rewards as rebates, your rebates will be converted to points at a rate of $0.01 to one point, and to miles at a rate of $0.01 to one mile. For example, $5 in rebates will transfer to 500 points or 500 miles. If you are earning your rewards as points, your points will be transferred to the cash back program at a rate of 1 point to $0.01. For example, 500 points will transfer to $5 in rebates. Points will be transferred to the miles program at a rate of 1 point to 1 mile. For example, 500 points will transfer to 500 miles. If you are earning your rewards as miles, your miles will be transferred to the cash back program at a rate of 1 mile to $0.01. For example, 500 miles will transfer to $5 in rebates. Miles will be transferred to the points program at a rate of 1 mile to 1 point. For example, 500 miles will transfer to 500 points.

The 15 categories that are eligible for receiving bonus rewards are:

Cable/Satellite TV, internet providers

Department stores

Utilities

Fast food & quick service restaurants

Gas & convenience stores

Drugstores

Pet supply stores/veterinarian

Phone/cell phone bills

Movie theaters

Grocery stores

Movie rentals

Dry cleaners

Local commuting

Beauty salons/SPAs

Gym memberships

The bad news is this card has a $30 annual fee which can be waived for the first year.

My thoughts: Upgrade to the Chase Freedom Plus Card is not a good move besides to receive the $100 bonus. I would suggest you open a new Chase Checking Account which can give you $125 sign-up bonus (You can easily get a coupon with $125 bonus at the post office.). If you have a Chase checking account, your Chase Freedom Card will automatically be upgraded to get 3% cash back from 5 categories (You can only get 3% cash back from 3 categories if you don’t have a checking account at Chase.).

My post “2008 Chase Check Card Promotion” was very popular in the past several months. Enroll your Chase debit card before 06/15/08, you can get $25 for every $250 in qualifying purchases made with your Chase Visa Check Card—up to $75. This promotion has ended on June 15, 2008. If you spent more than $250 before June 15, you should expect to receive your $25 (up to $75) bonus before July 1, 2008.Today I noticed that Chase just launched a new debit card promotion: Make 10 blink purchases by using your Chase debit card and you can get $10 bonus.

How to get the $10 bonus?

1. Enroll your Chase visa check card or visa check business card before August 31, 2008 at www.chasemake10blink.com.

2. Make 10 blink purchases with minimum $5 each time in the next following 30 days of registration. (In order to be considered as blink purchase, you can’t use your PIN at checkout. You should use your debit card as a credit card.)

3. Get $10 directly deposited to your Chase checking account.

It looks like that this $10 is easy money to take if you receive the invitation from Chase bank. If your Chase debit card is not a blink card, you can’t participate in this promotion. A blink card should have a ‘blink” sign on the face of the debit card. (Note: Chase first applied the blink technique on their credit cards.) Of course, you should use your blink card at the stores where you can blink at the checkout. To find where you can use your blink card, you can go to www.chaseblink.com and locate the places that allows you to blink. Usually you can find a blink card reader at quick service restautants (McDonald’s), convenience stores (7-Eleven) and drug stores (CVS Pharmacy).

Chase first launched the blink cards in 2005. The difference between a regular card and a blink card is the blink card contains a tiny RFID chip. This allows you to pay for something using a contact-less terminal (no swiping). The card will communicate with the reader via radio frequency technology and transmits to the reader approximately the same data that’s stored on its magnetic stripe. Once the transaction is successful, the reader will emit a signal to acknowledge payment is done. Chase brands the technology Blink, American Express calls it ExpressPay, MasterCard calls it PayPass. They are all pretty much the same thing.

RFID doesn’t have a great reputation and is not so popular among thousands of cardholders right now. There are some privacy
and security concerns. If you don’t want the contactless feature of your debit card or credit card, you can call Chase to issue you a new card without blink capability.

As I mentioned in this post, Chase Freedom Card members can have 5 categories to get 3% cashback if they have a Chase checking account. My Chase Freedom Card actually gives me 5 categories to have 3% cashback this month. Following is from my monthly statement.
