In May 2009, after Provident Bank was purchased by M&T, my checking account was converted to a "Totally Free" checking account. I received a letter stating this had occurred, but the monthly statements stopped. On February 19, 2010, I received a statement saying that my balance was $0.00. All the money in the account had disappeared! When I called M&T, 800-724-2440, I was told that after 60 days of no activity, the "Totally Free" account becomes a "Worry Free" account, which charges $8.00 a month. Again, no statements were sent out, and I received no letter, since this is an automatic "feature" of "Totally Free" checking. The branch manager at my M&T branch is now "looking for a solution."
