Get Overdraft Fees Back from Bank of America by Writing to Their CEO

October 18th, 2008 David Leave a comment Go to comments

Bank of America used to be the largest bank by assets and second largest commercial bank by deposits before the acquisition of WaMu by JP Morgan chase & Co. Bank of America’s most popular banking products may be the MyAccess Checking Account and the Keep the Change program. However, there are a lot of complaints about the terrible overdraft fees. Here I will tell you the most useful method to get the overdraft fees back from Bank of America.

Why the overdraft fees are so terrible?

First, what’s “an overdraft fee”? An overdraft item fee occurs whenever funds must be provided to cover a transaction that overdraws the account. Believe it or not, overdraft fees have increasingly become a source of profits. Banks and credit unions collect about $17.5 billion in overdraft fees per year. As reported by USA Today:

In 2007, Wachovia put in place a tool that tells employees how much they can refund to customers hit by overdraft fees. The bank, in memos, also tells employees to “sell” a debit card with every account because it makes money when consumers use it.

Bank of America raised the fee charged on the first day a customer overdraws to $25 from $20. BOA also raised the number of times a customer can be hit with this fee per day to seven from five. It’s really terrible. Furthermore, the next following days after the first day, the fee is $35.00 for each item. A customer can easily get up to $500 fees just for the overdraft. And it’s vry common to pay $100 over draft fees for just 2 or 3 cups of coffee!

It’s common to go to your local BOA branches to complain the over draft fees if it really happens to you. Or you may call BOA up to appeal. However, most of the employees are trained to give you a samll portion or even nothing to you. So there must be other ways to get the money back.

After a little search on the web, I realized that the most effective way to get the over draft fees back is to write to their CEO!

This has been confirmed to be successful for many victims of BOA’s over draft fees. The CEO of Bank of America’s address is:

Mr. Kenneth D. Lewis
100 N. Tryon Street.
Mail Code NC-1-007-18-01
Charlotte, NC 28255

In the letter to the CEO, all you have to do is to state the reason why you have so many over draft fees and tell him that as a loyal BOA’s customer, you hope he can help you!

And there are other methods to reach BOA’s executive customer relations.

AMAZING… After a nightmare half day of speaking with unfriendly, even rude customer service reps, I found this blog… tried the (704) number. Spoke with an incredibly friendly woman named Arnetta. She immediately refunded all 4 overdrafts and gave a friendly pep talk about finances, etc. Thank you and thank you Arnetta!

Call 704-386-5687!! I had problems getting through a few times…It would say please hold for the next available advocate, and then beep a few times and disconnect. I just kept at it and eventually reached Jose. He refunded the fees, no problem and was REALLY nice. 5 minutes to get back 7 overdraft charges. Don’t give up! We have overdrafted in the past (our fault) but thought this time BoA was out of line. I’m so glad I decided to go after the fees this time!!

I was $258 dollars in debt and I had no solution. I tried talking to my local bankers, but they didn’t seem to help. I went online and chatted with the bank of america agents. They only refunded $70 dollars back. However, I was still in debt and browse the internet for a solution to my problems. I came over this site and read the positive feedbacks. I called the 704 number and this lady went over my transaction with me. It was probably a 25 minute phone call, lots of excruciating questions, and details over each transaction. I wanted to hang up because it sounded like my mother nagging about my financial problems. In the end it was worth it, she refunded $175 dollars back.. My account went from a -188 to a -13. I THANK her so much for refunding my money and getting me out of debt. Call her number 704 she is the only solution!

I was skeptical at first, but I called the 704 number and after a brief but informative lecture about proper management of my account I received a refund on all 4 of my over draft fees! The gentlemen I spoke with was so kind and informative and very pleasent to speak with! After the customer service number after being escalated to a manager refused to help me in anyway. Even though this was due to transactions that were pending over the weekend and I am a long time and loyal customer of BOA. I will not make the same mistake of over drafting my account again! I realize I must use caution with my account! Thank you so much to whom ever created this post!!!!

They refunded 280 dollars out of 280 dollars worth of over draft fees!!! All MY fault. It looks like they will only do this as a one time courtesy though, so learn from your mistakes because they won’t do it again! Thanks, for the 704 # it worked. Tell them you got the number online thats it. They will definitely lecture you though. Worth it in my book!

It seems when I merged my account with my wife I forgot to tell her I used it only for deposits…well she started using the Check Card and before I know it I have 7 overdraft fees!

I called customer service as soon as I found out and they reversed three and said that if I did a counter deposit that afternoon I would avoid two more from that day…but there where two that where still pending they could do anything about until they posted. Both the teller and the phone rep said I could have them reversed once they posted the next day.

Well I called customer service back and they refused because really was my fault due to a lack of communication, not theirs and they had already reversed three. I asked to talk to a supervisor and even threatened leaving BOA, he wouldn’t budge.

I then did some google research and came across this blog! I read through it and asked my wife to call the 704 number above…and let me say thank you so much! The lady at this number gave my wife a talking too like she was a kid and didn’t even ask so much as what and why, but where my wife got the number from…though after her talk she reversed the last two charges!

    Thank you so much!!!

my account was closed to fraud, my husband and my join tax return came in just his name my account was in my name and they said it was fraud, we actually had to go to the bank and he had to sign a affidavit saying it was okay for OUR tax return to be deposisted into the account. they overdrafted my account 6 times, with a 40$ research fee closed out the account with over 200$ and sent a cashiers check, we missed several payments and had no food or no money for over 2 weeks of this happening. thanks a lot bank of america. this number did NOT refund our money back to us.

I spoke with XXXX today in customer relations. After discussing ways to keep track of my statement balance, she refunded $175 worth of overdraft charges. She was extremely helpful and understanding of my plight. I recommend any BofA customer to give the executive relations line a try if they feel they have exhausted other options. Thanks for this blog information; A complete lifesaver!

What a gentleman, even if he didn’t credit me back he explained to me what and why. He did credit me all my overdraft fees as I have been a customer for 16 years and no overdrafts ever, however wanted to let people know who are bad mouthing the banks that there are great people who listen to you and understand the hard times most of us are facing…Thanks Jose VAlentin

Yes I am wowed!! I was very skeptical but called the executive relations general number. Talked to a girl who was VERY understanding…. and got 5 NSF charges refunded to my account!! She suggested using a paper registered in addition to online banking so I know exactly what my balance is at all times…. This is GREAT stuff!! :)

This number saved my bacon. I had 8(!) over draft fees by my own fault of miscalculations and all of them were waived. I spoke with a very pleasant man on the other end. After seeing that I tried to pump money into the account to keep it from further overdrawing (to no avail) he waived all the fees I incurred. Saved me $280, and even further overdraft encounters that would have happened if he didn’t intervene.

Never do I say this, but bless that number and bless the man on the other line. They saved me from so much.

Thanks for posting this information. I was hit with $140 in overdraft fees yesterday due in my reliance to the “available balance” on my account Monday evening. I spoke to 2 customer service agents over the phone, one supervisor and one agent in person at my local branch. None were able to give me a refund because I had already been given a courtesy refund last month (an issue with an unauthorized transaction that I later had removed).

Frustrated I googled “bank of america courtesy refund” and found this site. Called the 704 number and was expecting a Customer Relations Dept. but instead got the Office of the CEO. I spoke to a gentleman named Carlos who was able to help me out.

So relieved. For all those frustrated and feeling like there’s no way out try the number above. Goodluck.

I just got off the phone with a supervisor who is refusing to help me. I have a checking account that I opened in Missouri and a savings account I opened in Texas (which is where I now live). I thought when I opened my savings account I would have overdraft protection, but the supervisor said since I opened one in Missouri and one in Texas they are not linked (even though I have Keep the Change!!) If they don’t credit back the fees tomorrow I will call this number. Thanks so much for the info!

I called the 704 number today the lady transferred me to someone else and this lady said she would do some research and call me back tomorrow. I am hoping they refund this. If i must I can afford the stupid charges this person made but the overdraft fees are 5 times that much there is no way. Will post back my results. Thanks for this info.

THIS REALLLLLLLY WORKS. I called the 704 number, I am actually still on the call they are putting $140 worth of fees back into my account tomorrow and it was my fault that i over drew on my account. i explaine to her that I learned my lesson and it was an error of ingnorance on my part. I suggest calling them and speaking in a humble pleasant tone and they are more than willing to help. She is also looking into another matter for me as well. God is good cause in the words of TiTi from Set it Off, ‘ I need that money” lol

That is absolutely amazing. There was a time before that I had overdrafts which were disappointingly never refunded. Even after attempts to visit the manager at a local branch and then speaking to a customer service supervisor, I was refused a refund. Now, about a year later, after discovering once again I have 4 new over draft fees, I decided to research. This research definitely paid off. I spoke with Kimberly at the 704 number and she kindly gave a little advice on keeping a ledger even for debit card trans. She then agreed to access my account on Monday, after the pending od fees clear, at which time she will then issue the refund on all 4 od fees. She also suggested that I take advantage of a program in which your debit card will decline if your balance is not sufficient. I took her advice and enrolled into this program. BTW, she also mentioned that this good deed is a one time deal. Perfect. Thank you so much poster for the great post and thank you Kimberly for keeping me sane today which in turn will keep me sane for the rest of the weekend.

I’m telling everyone I can- Emailing the Bank of America CEO works! I’m a firm believer that one day of mistakes happens to everyone, and you should get a second chance.

I overdrafted on my account by about $60 and received $175 in overdraft and “transfer” fees. (They took $7.00 from my savings then charged me $10 for the automatic transfer!)
These overdrafts were all my personal error, but they were $12 and $15 purchases for food and gas. Bank of America has called me when I charge things out of state (again, small purchases) but they gave me no notification my account balance was negative!

I called customer service, who only offered to take off one of the charges. (I also recommend turning off your overdraft protection. Then the transaction will simply not go through.) I told them that wasn’t enough. I live paycheck to paycheck and would be in major trouble with bills if they assessed all the fees.

I emailed the new Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan (brian.t.moynihan@bankofamerica.com), explaining the hardship the fees would cause me. I got a response one day later. They were refunding a full $175 as a courtesy to me!

Thanks to this prompt and generous response, Bank of America is keeping my business. I do recommend turning off the overdraft protection so this doesn’t happen again though! They’ll only give you thiis courtesy refund once.

    Thank you so much!
I called the regular customer service number and was only able to get one of four fees refunded to my account! So I did a little googling that led me to this life saving 704 number. I spoke to a very nice man, taught me a little lesson on keeping track of my balances, put me on hold for two minutes and went ahead and gave me my money back.
    Thank you so so much!!

I didnt really believe the comments about the emails and phone numbers. Well after trying numerous emails that were all returned as undeliverable I finally was able to call into that 704 number today. After talking to a very nice, understanding lady on the phone about how I didnt know how the over draft fees occurred she refunded me all the fees, a total of $105! Definitely call the 704 number if you have problems with over draft fees and need them refunded.

After reading all the testimonies, I am praying my problem gets resolved when I call this number on tomorrow, first chance I get.. I incurred 6 overdraft fees, and boy am I truly frustrated. No, I can’t blame anyone but myself for lack of check balancing the correct way; but why do the representatives sound like they’re so dehuminized. I was advised of how I could avoid these fees in the future, but I need a resolution today. I mean 420.00 in overdraft fees for transactions less than 10.00..I mean come on, who has money to give away like that.

This is so amazing!! After being hit with FOUR overdraft charges yesterday (I still have no idea how they came about, I checked my balance Monday night and it was over $90, and then on Tuesday morning it was -$120!!) I was livid and ready to start using my Chase account for all purposes and close BOA. I had my account with BOA since April 2007 with no problems, but this was crazy. I called BOA’s “customer service” and they were only authorized to remove 2 of the charges, and this was after speaking to a supervisor. Then I found this wonderful site and called the 704 number and she removed the other two! I am amazed and so happy. The woman I spoke with was super nice and understanding! Finally some relief! Thank you so much to whoever started this site!!

Thank you for this help.
