The title says it and it’s true. “Which is the best credit card for college students?” This the most frequently asked question from my friends. My answer is always “Citi mtvU Platinum Select Visa Card”. The reason is very simple—it’s just the best.
When we are using a credit card, we want to get a certain amount of cashback and some additional benefits. So what are the top categories of expenses in college? Dinning out, textbooks and other entertainments. That’s why this card is so popular among college students. You can get 5 thankyou points for every dollar you spent at restautants, bookstores, video stores and movie theaters. Plus you can also get 5 thankyou points for shopping at Amazon.com—earth’s biggest merchant with a wide selection of books, magazines, music, DVDs, videos, electronics, computers, software, apparel & accessories, shoes, etc. Accumulated thankyou points can be redeemed as gift cards or cash at thankyou.com.
Another interesting feature of this card is you will be awarded for being a good student. You can earn 250~2,000 bonus thankyou points each semester for maintaining a good GPA. (Of course, you have to mail official transcript to them.) Furthermore, you can get 25 bonus points each month for paying the bill on time!
With Citi virtual account numbers intergrated in this card, your onine shopping will be protected.
Overall, this card features:
- 0% APR for 6 months on balance transfers, purchases, and cash advances*
- No balance transfer fee with this offer
- NO Annual Fee
- 10% Discount at MTV Online and MTV NYC Store
- Earn reward tickets for MTVU Spring Break
- Earn reward tickets for MTV VMA Awards
- 1 Thank You point earned for every dollar spent
- 25 Thank You points per month for paying your bill on time
- Earn Thank You Points FAST with this card just by being a good student-250~2,000 Thank You Points for earning good grades
I will apply for this card in the near future. Usually I eat out at restaurants at least 10 times every week. I can’t imagine how much I can save if I use this card. (Currently, I’m using 2% cash back card at restaurants.) Remember, if you apply for this card, they may need you to provide proofs or they will contact your college. Don’t expect to get an instant approval. For those who don’t familiar with ThankYou points, you can visit www.thankyou.com. To apply for this card, please click here.

Can the thankyou points earned from this card be combined with the points from other cards?

Yes. Your account at ThankYouNetwork is separated from your credit accounts.

That is better than Chase, which does not have such a point network so the points from different cards can not be put together.

Ming. I agree with you. In this way, if you close an account, you won’t loose the points. I would say I like ThankYouNetwork.

I applied this card yesterday. But, unfortunately, refused quickly. The reason is that I have a permanent address and phone number outside the US. Is it kidding me?
Of course, I have an address outside the US, but I am a full time student here. I am not eligible for this student card??

Hi Shawn. Did you put your “Permanent Home Contact Information” outside U.S.? Did you choose yes at “Are you a permanent resident or U.S. citizen?”? Usually, you should say you’re a US citizen or permanent resident. And you can put your current home address as your permanent home address. It’s won’t hurt and they won’t investigate on that. If you tell they you’re not a U.S.citizen or permanent resident, you will be rejected.
According to the FAQ:
Do I have to be a resident of the United States to be approved online for credit?
Yes.
You can apply for this card later, but you have to say your are…

Thanks cardoffer.
I guess I did something wrong in the application. So, what should I do now? Apply again and say I am a permanent resident? Will it work? I mean will the previous application negatively affect my future application?
BTW, do I have to say I am a permanent resident or U.S. citizen when I apply credit card online with Citi or other issuers?

Yes. You should choose “Yes” at“Are you a permanent resident or U.S. citizen?”. And you should put a US address at “Permanent Home Contact Information”. You can apply again but I’m not sure. Another way is to call Citi and ask them to reconsider your application.

Congratulations! Enjoy your new card. You can get 5 ThankYou points at Amazon.Com, restaurants and other music/bookstores.

Shawn, I got exactly the same problem as yours! I answered “no” because I thought what it means to be a “permanent resident” is a green-card holder. I got rejected and was so disappointed. I’m trying to reapply the card and I hope I got approved. If not, I will be pissed off! =p
Thanks!
